Lakeview - Washington Golf Challenge
The world will have to wait a bit though did see some of the Bears triumph over the Packers last night. Took me way back to the '50's when the Bears were my team. Remember Papa George Halas? Did you know that he played baseball for the Yankees and when felled by injury was replaced by none other than Babe Ruth?
And just one other thing: Why not South Florida as national champion in college football this year? Number 5 this week after making their first appearance in the polls just three weeks ago. Go South Florida! And the rest of you guys, Go Golf...

Sunday Wrap
-Colts win easily at Tampa Bay. And I for one think they are more impressive than the Patriots who I also saw a bit of today - lots of three and out for them. The critics are saying the Patriots are the team to beat. They got to go through the champs first.
-Lorena loses in playoff.
-Marty, Number One Son, returns to Indy. He's in the business of selling blogs. New for him this year and something that is going great guns. And yes I did ask him about my blog. More on that at another time.
Reminder: Lakeview-Washington Golf Challenge tomorrow at 9am. Should be fun.
Sunday Funnies: Local Golf, Irish,
-Word out of Eagle View is that Scottie Arthur, with darkness descending and using a bright pink golf ball, buried a putt on the third playoff hole to give his team sole possession of fourth place in the Mike Arvin fund raising scramble for Loogootee softball. First place went to the Potts Team, not the first or last time we will see that combination (Mark, Sam, Greg, Joe for starters) walk away with the top spot.
-Larry Hembree finished up at Lakeview and immediately went north to Eagle View, or I am assuming he did as there was a message at the clubhouse for him wondering where he was. Larry's comment when he received the message: "I have another 18 holes to play?!" We were all drained from the excitement of the skins match and the unexpectedly hot and humid weather.
College Football
-In reading about the Irish win, I learned that they avoided tying for the worst losing streak in Irish history. That distinction remains with the squad that played in the fall of 1960, winners of their first and last games of the season and losers of the eight in between. Hmmm, fall of 1960; that would be my senior year. I had forgotten that though I did remember that our four year class was the very first to graduate with a losing football record (like that really matters).
-New power teams to move up in the rankings with more upsets yesterday. How about South Florida, Boston College, California. And is this the week that Illinois and Indiana get into the top twenty? Love the upsets. Did watch the LSU-Florida game last night, a goodie.
The world turns. Time for me to go have breakfast and see what's happening with Nixon in his very last days in the White House. It's lovely out there so go golf, it's good for you.

Saturday Wrap: Cubs: Go Fish. Darn it... etc.
-Irish up 20-6 against UCLA. What? Get outta here...
-SC upset by 40 point underdog Stanford.
-Purdue being swamped by Ohio State.
-Hoosiers win again!
-Number One Son Marty down for a visit. Brings his electronic toys: iphone (does just about everything all in the palm of your hand), new Apple laptop, Cannon Digital camera. All nifty.
-This is fun, from TPM, A Closer Look at Bush's record on jobs, by Steve Benin:
Hmmm. Surprised? I am but I shouldn't have been. Those were good economic years. And besides, there were no unnecessary wars nor any frivolus tax cuts for the wealthy. Oh well, guess we gotta go from where we are and not pay too much attention to the past.In response to the latest monthly employment report, the White House released a "fact sheet" yesterday bragging about the president's record on job creation. It led Paul Krugman to take a closer look at Bush's numbers as compared to his predecessor's.
Over the whole of the Clinton administration, the economy added 22.7 million jobs -- 237,000 per month.
Over the whole of the Bush administration to date, the economy added only 5.8 million jobs -- 72,000 per month.
But, the White House says, the first two years of Bush's presidency shouldn't count because there was a recession and 9/11 affected the economy. It's only fair, the president's supporters say, to start counting since August 2003, and forget about his first 32 months in office.
Fine, Krugman said. Bush's monthly average, using the cherry-picked timeline, still trails Clinton, 172,000 per month to 237,000 per month.
Krugman concludes, "Did I mention that the Clinton job boom followed an, um, increase in taxes?"
I'd only add that U.S. News recently asked Rudy Giuliani about this in an interview about economic policy. The magazine said, "The Democrats are going to say, 'We raised taxes in the '90s, cut the deficit, and the economy boomed.' Why not try and rerun the '90s instead of cutting taxes?"
Giuliani responded, "Because we have actually done more job creation by lowering taxes than by raising taxes."
Reality shows otherwise.
