#8 with a net score of 6: K.Hudson/Lents
#9 with a net score of 4: Swayze/Wallace

Following the nine hole skin match, eight golfers went out in a preview of next Tuesday's match play event involving teams from Loogootee (the East squad) and Montgomery/Washington (the West Squad). The format:

This is a match play event and low score on each hole is worth one point, with half points for ties. Three parts, Best Ball, Scramble, Alternate Shot, each part worth one point (follow this link to learn more about match play):

How Matches are Scored at Match Play

At root, match play scoring is very simple: Golfers compete hole by hole, and the golfer (or team) who wins the most holes wins the match.

1. Best Ball: players play own ball; best score of the two players is the team score with low score on the hole earning one point.
2. Scramble: players each hit and choose best ball till in the cup; each player hits a ball from each stop till ball is in the cup.
3. Alternating Shot: players decide who will hit the first tee shot and alternate till ball is in the cup; alternate shot from first shot on first hole of match till last shot on last hole of match.

Today Mike Anderson and Al Kavanaugh (West) ran all over Mike Bird and Morris Cornelius (East) to win their match 2 points to zero; one point awarded for each match of the three with Anderson and Kavanaugh winning the Best Ball and the Scramble and then tying the Alternate Shot when Mike Anderson chipped in for birdie on #9. In the other foursome, Jack Lents and Rex Hudson, on loan to the West, lost to Jack Butcher and Ken Hudson (East) on the Best Ball, then tied them in the Scramble. They then won the Alternate Shot evening their match. Thus the West won a two to zero win over the East (this was corrected from an earlier version when Jack Butcher came out to see how those guys beat them on the Best Ball; turns out they hadn't - I just misunderstood Jack Lents and Rex Hudson, who, this time, did not correct my error - the rascals). (I think we have the West right where we want them, thinking that we are going to be easy prey next Tuesday...)

Next Tuesday should be a whale of a match.

Bird, Trinkle/Lents, Brown, Potts and Bird Triumph

With rain coming down in drips and drabs and not a single player heading for the clubhouse, the second nine holes of the Senior Individual Flighted Tournament was finished this morning. The welcome showers did dampen a few scores but for the most part just added an element of long awaited wetness to an already drama filled day. In the end, after lead changes and ups and downs galore around the golf course, the winners were finally determined. To wit: In the A Flight, Mike Bird fought off the challenges of Al Kavanaugh (who actually tied for the lead after a birdie on #8), Mike Anderson (who got to within one stroke of the lead after a birdie on #4) and Jack Butcher (who also tied for the lead after his par on #6) to come out on top with a score of 74. In the B flight, Jack Lents and Dave Trinkle came from behind to catch and pass Rex Hudson and share of the trophy with scores of 78. In C Flight, Dave Brown shot a sterling 38 on the second nine to catch and pass Wayne Pearl by two strokes with a final total of 81. In the D Flight, Sam Potts hung on as Walt Bowens collapsed to beat Ray Shaw by three strokes, Sam finishing with a core of 92. And finally, in E Flight, Diane Bird fired her best ever nine hole round with a 43 to finish at 91 and gain a skinny one stoke victory over Pam Byron. In the end, three of the number one seeds prevailed and were joined by a number two seed (Diane Bird) and a number three seed (Sam Potts). Sharpshooters for the day were John Walker on both #3 and #8. Jack Lents on #7, and Charlie Sheetz on #9. All the scores are posted on the Senior League's web page.

Day for Seniors to Shine

And we come to the last official event in the Senior League's calendar for the year 2007. Second nine holes of the flighted tournament; preceded by a putting contest, followed by a luncheon. Bring your A game along with your dish of goodies. Looks like we will get a bit of cloud cover and not so difficult heat. And do stay hydrated, we are still in the oven of this drought with the heat wave on top.

Wednesday Wrap, Tooth Fixed

Yes I did go to Bloomington this morning and sit around most of the morning while good Dr. Spires and his lovely assistant, Andrea, kept me company. And just because of their company, I am feeling much better tonight - still hesitant to chew on my right side as it is a little tender. But for the most part, back to normal and I still have my tooth.

Part of the afternoon was spent watching a movie with Diane: Wilde. Story of Oscar Wilde, prolific writer who was put in jail for his homosexuality. Died young, only forty years old, and if we are to believe the movie, because his health was ruined by the hard labor he was forced to do as a jailbird. Give the movie a rating of three mostly because of the man to man love scenes - my preference is man-woman or woman-woman. It did spark an interest to learn more about Oscar Wilde though, not only for the wild life he lead but also, and mostly so, because of his writing.

At the golf course this evening; played nine holes with Diane, getting ready for tomorrow. Also put together the pairings for tomorrow's 2nd nine holes of the senior flighted tournament. The low four scores in each flight are paired together - let them duke it out for the trophy. Of course, a fifth or sixth place golfer, or lower, may sneak in there and steal it from all of them. Don't forget, we start at nine with a putting contest and play is followed by a pitch-in luncheon.

Still hot; still brown. We need some rain. Do a rain dance before you go to bed tonight. Or, better yet, we'll do it as a group sometime tomorrow morning... (smile)

More Senior Flighted Tournament

Rex Hudson after his 3 iron shot from 140 yards finally dropped into the cup at #4 for an eagle.

Friday morning comments on Thursday's play:

-Diane Bird opened with a birdie on #9.
-Wayne Pearl continues his sterling play with a C Flight leading 41.
-Rex Hudson used his eagle and an all around fine day of golf to take the lead in the B Flight.
-Jack Lents stayed close by getting consecutive birdies on #7 and #8.
-Jack Butcher had a couple of unusual birdies to keep him close in the A Flight.
-Dale DeLong and Walt Bowens shot the daylights out with a 41 and a 43 to lead their flights.
-Pam Byron and Clyde Wake had super days as well with a 44 and a 45.
-Mike Anderson opened with a double bogie on #1 and then shot one under the rest of the way to hold second place in A Flight.

Final nine holes, and a pitch-in luncheon, next Thursday. Nine am start time with a putting contest to precede the tournament play.

Senior League Champs

Bob Norris and Sam Potts after play today. which saw them crowned kings of the team competition. Though weather was cool and perfect when play started, by the end it was hot and humid; our kings were drained. Charlie Sheetz basks in the glory of his triumph after a season of dedication and hard work.

The afternoon brought storms that dumped about an inch and a half of much needed rain on the golf course, and temperatures that dropped from near 90 to the mid 60's. What lovely relief...

Norris and Potts Hang On to Win Team Title

The Senior League results are posted. Bob Norris and Sam Potts squeak through as team champions when Kenny Hudson and Carroll Rayhill come up short against Dave Trinkle and Walt Bowens. Hudson and Rayhill needed to get at least one more point than Potts and Norris and instead came up two and a half shy. Sam and Bob actually lost their match against John Chapman and Richard Barber, 7.5 points to 6.5 points, but managed to get enough points to stay atop the board and walk off with the trophy for the season.

In the race for second place in the individual competition, Wayne Pearl shot a net 31 which gave him enough points to slip ahead of Al Kavanuagh, Bob Norris and Dave Strange to claim the hotly contested second place spot. Charlie Sheetz, who wrapped up the championship last week, coasted this week, shot a 53 and collected zero points. Guess he was seeing if he really was uncatchable. The answer: yup, uncatchable.

In other news:

-Diane Bird waited till the last event to get her best ever score, a 43, which gave her a net 29. That was good enough for low net honors. She also got herself a hole prize at always tough #3.
-Allen Swayze (45) and Clyde Wake (51) also had good rounds, each ending up with net 30's.
-Junior Byron went low with a 36 and walked away with the low gross for the day.

More Senior Tales

Picture: Pam, Junior, Mike and Albert after their round this morning.

Comments:

-Dave Brown had a super round of 38 which got him a share of both the low gross and the low net. Super cool playing on a super hot day.
-Judy Walker does a super job of subbing for Jack B., fires a six under and shares low net with Dave B.
-Short handed Vic Wallace comes up short in battle with Sam and Bob who are relentless in their march towards the championship.
-Diane and Wilma try to be nice to me, give me the first hole but then watch me self destruct on four of the next five with two double bogies and two bogies. Mikey is in the golf goddess' dog house for some reason...
-Diane and Wilma play stead golf, fire net rounds of 33 and 37.
-Rex Hudson is the only one to birdie a par three today, #3, and he gets a hole prize to go along with it.
-in case you didn't notice, it was hot out there; even hotter now.

Sheetz Puts Lock on Title

Charlie Sheetz put a lock on the Individual title today with a round of 44 gross and a 30 net. Wowzer!

And Bob Norris and Sam Potts remain on top of the team competition with Kenny Hudson and Carroll Rayhill falling a point behind. Next week is the last week and as it turns out it will be the decisive week. The results are up on the website. The highlights:

More comments a little later...

Seniors Take the Stage

Senior Leaguers off and running this morning with the Team competition hot and heavy. Weather hot and steamy. Should be three good matches for the three teams at the top: Norris and Potts up against DeLong and Wallace; Hudson and Rayhill versus Pearl and Foster; and Lannan and Harper in a struggle against Swayze and Sheetz. Other matches of note: Diane and Wilma looking to trash Mike; Judy Walker standing in for Jack Butcher and with Rex going up against the likes of Jim Bateman and Jack Lents, that would be Jim Bateman, the guy with the magic in the irons.

In Individual competition, Charlie Sheetz intends to end it all early. Almost any number might just do that with his 112 point lead going into today's play. Second place up for grabs with Dave Strange sitting pretty at the moment; could be different by about 10:15 this morning. Lots of contenders for the glory of second place in the standings.

Fairways still hard; scores expected to be low.

Dave Strange's Ace and Other Stories

Dave Strange's Ace

Great moment for senior Dave Strange as he stood on #7 tee box and watched his yellow (green to some) ball bounce in front of the green and then onto the green and then roll rather slowly across the green and into the cup. Playing partner Diane Bird hollered out as the ball finally disappeared, "Hole in One!" and exchanged high fives with the broadly smiling new ace here at Lakeview. Plenty of witnesses as Wilma Bateman and Clyde Wake were also there at #7; and watching the goings-on at #8 tee box were Bob Norris, Sam Potts, Chuck White and Mike Bird. This all happened just after league play started here this morning and continues the hole-in-one madness here this year. That makes nine since Terry Padgett's opening ace on Tuesday, April 17th. And we're still counting.

Other League Notes

-Kenny Hudson and Carroll Rayhill blasted their opponents, Dick Barber and John Chapman, and in the process got enough points to tie Potts and Norris at the top of the team standings.
-Don Lannan and Virgil Harper smacked the Byron team and remained well within striking distance of the two teams at the top.
-22 of the 34 golfers today finished with net rounds of 35 or under. Impressive.
-Charlie Sheetz just about has a lock on the individual championship.
-Chuck White from south of Washington subbed for the first time today. Ran into a bunch of people who he knows from school, work and play.
-Missed Walt Bowens and Dave Trinkle as did their opponents, Dale DeLong and Vic Wallace who had to play the course in their stead.

Saturday Manager's Scramble

With SAIC having nine teams of four and starting at seven this Saturday morning, am going to limit the Manager's scramble to twelve players. If you want to play this Saturday, sign up early or take your chances that a spot will be open on Saturday morning. The scramble teams will mix in as best they can with the SAIC scramblers.

Sheetz, Norris and Potts Remain on Top

Results from this morning's Senior League play are posted. Super day for Dave Strange with a nifty hole-in-one on #7, his second hole of the day. Wayne Pearl also had a pretty special day, firing a gross 38. And look at Al Kavanaugh, firing a 37 and collecting two hole prizes; he and Dave Strange jumped Jack Butcher in the fight for second place. The leaders, Charlie Sheetz, and Bob Norris and Sam Potts, shot well enough to stay on top of the individual and team standings. Bob and Sam, playing against Mike Bird (me) and Chuck (the Rifleman) White, needing the last hole to win the match and the low net score, managed a couple of sixes which was good enough to beat the two pars thrown at them by their opponents and to win both the match and the net score by a very thin single stroke. Seniors Time to Shine Again

On Senior Play Today

It's bound to be a hot Thursday on and off the course. Charlie Sheetz claims he's ready to get to it again and to remain on top after today's play. Be hard for any contender to catch him so the race for second takes on an added measure of interest. Jack Butcher sits there at the moment but about ten very antsy golfers have their eyes on his back. Al Kavanaugh looks to be about ready to make a move, as does Jack Lents and Don Lannan. No tigers around but plenty of stalking in the neighborhood.

In team play, Bob Norris and Sam Potts lead the pack and go up against the last place team of Mike Bird and the occasional sub - as of right now, do have a sub coming in to help me with the current challenge of containing Bob and Sam. That should help the likes of Kenny and Carroll and Don and Virgil, each of whom have a very good shot at ending the day in first place.

The course is playing easy with the hard and dry fairways so expect pretty good scores today. No pressure; just come out and play smart.

-Sam Potts (net 31) and Bob Norris (net 33) each had good days and that was enough to whip up on Dave Strange and Clyde Wake. Still hold first in the hotly contested team race.
-Pam Byron had a super day, fired the low round of the day, a net 28, and came in second on two hole prizes as well.
-Charlie Sheetz had a day to forget but figures it's still going to be pretty hard to knock him out of first place. He's right there but things do happen, Charlie...
-Jack Butcher had a good day but didn't like the idea of him and Rex getting beat by a couple of ladies. Ah, handicap golf; sometimes it's a rascally thing...
-the ladies, Diane Bird and Helen Streepy, had good days, both shooting net 34's.
-Dave Strange had a good day as well, shooting a net 29, a gross 41 and finds himself in as good a position as anyone to catch Charlie.
-and guess who's in contention again - Mr. Don Lannan, a one time king of the league. He shot as net 30, a gross 41, and got a hole prize to boot.
-Dave Trinkle and Walt Bowens took me out to the woodshed (I've been there several times this year...) with Dave firing a nifty 39 gross and a net 33.

Seniors Time to Shine

Seniors are up first today With Charlie, Bob and Sam leading in the standings. That would be Charlie Sheetz, Bob Norris and Sam Potts. Am wondering if Charlie is so far in front now that what we have left is a battle for second in the individual competition (?) Not willing to concede anything yet though in that second place battle Jack Butcher is the current leader. Bob and Sam on the other hand have all sorts of contenders for the top spot in the team competition. Clyde Wake and Dave Strange take them on head to head today. Should be a good match. Should be a good morning to play golf with no rain forecast till this afternoon.
