Early Wednesday Morning Notes on Tuesday Play

It's still dark up here on our little hill just south of the golf course, just north of the east-west version of St. Mary's road. Won't be for long before dawn's rosy glow will be rising in the east.

Notes on Tuesday Men:

-John Walker showed up with a magic putter yesterday and played darn good ball otherwise as well to post a 34, his best ever, and take the B Flight trophy. He also closed with two birdies, got the low score of the tournament and the low score of the day. Big feather in the cap to JW.
-Another John, Big John Foddrill, fired a second consecutive league 38 (after another weekend of playing with the boys) and walked off with the crown in the Individual standings and in the E Flight. He destroyed his competition the last two weeks of the season. Sometimes more golf is good for you, wouldn't you say, John?
-Junior Byron cussed and moaned with the placement of the tee blocks at #9 after he and Kevin made a shambles of that hole with a doulbe and a triple bogie. Still, his 36 was good enough to get him a share of the A Flight title with Phil Eyler, each of them firing 71's for the 18 holes.
-Chris Hogan got himself an eagle on #4 but couldn't stand prosperity so he followed that with a quadruple bogie on #5. Three shots out of bounds from the tee. Chris... Still managed to blow out the competition in the F Flight, taking the crown by three strokes with an 82.
-Steven Downey had himself a birdie run on #2, #3, and #4, should have continued it on #5 and #6, and then paid the price with a bogie-double bogie finish. Still finished with a 36...
-Keith Parsons and Bill Carrico calmly went about their business, shot matching 47's, and smoked the competition in the Team race. Keith also finished second in the Individual race and took the G Flight crown. Pretty good for a guy who had to take a year's sabbatical with a bum back.
-Tony Wease, Mr. Consistency, shot a second consecutive 40 to whip up on the competition in C Flight. His 80 won by three over John Drake.
-Tracy Rayhill and Jay Breeden played pretty consistently over the last two weeks as well, a couple of 40's for Tracy, a 39 and a 41 for Jay. Their 80's gave them a share of the C Flight trophy, just nipping a foursome with 81's (Albertson, Gilley, Johnson, and Jay's dad, Mike).

And of course there is the long drive competition which was finally won by Tyler Kidwell but not without some stiff competition during the final minutes of the day and the season as Dave Wininger and Dad Mike Kidwell knocked the ball silley on #6 as well. Approximate distance of Tyler's drive: 317 yards; Dave and Mike's: 300 yards.

Super season, guys. It was a lot of fun watching you duke it out week in and week out. Next week Doug Denson starts his Tuesday evening scrambles, this year with a start time of 5pm.

Rosy glow in the east...

Long Drive Champion

Picture: Champ Tyler Kidwell on the right with three of the long ball contenders that he beat, Joe Allen, John foddrill, and Mike Kidwell. Some fourteen golfers accepted the challenge in this initial long ball competition.

Tyler Kidwell lived up to expectations this afternoon by driving his ball at #6 tee box some 317 yards down the fairway and thus becoming the first long ball champion here at Lakeview. Dave Wininger and Mike Kidwell drove it some 300 yards to come in second.

Tuesday Men One More Time Please

Final day of the season for the Tuesday Men and we still don't have our winners. Does look like it's a two team race in the Team competition though not impossible for the third and fourth place teams to sneak in. Bill Carrico and Keith Parsons take on George Templin and Don Nolan - would have been fun to have them go out together this afternoon; they won't be separated by much as they tend to play about the same time. Dave and Dan along with John and Dean wish them the best, I am sure...

And in the Individual competition, any one of the top eight could easily end up on top tonight. John Foddrill was out again this weekend hoping for a repeat of last week when he also played on the weekend and then shot a 38 on Tuesday night. I imagine Trenton would love a 32 and a long drive on #6. John Drake is playing awfully well. Kevin Byron is explosive and could go low. Charlie Lyon knows what first place feels like and has Phil and John and Skip to push him along. Curt Johnson still looking for that elusive 38; would be a good night to get it. Don Nolan and Keith Parsons have to be considered prime contenders but they have to go low to win it all; they have been know to do just that.

Then there is all that other stuff going on to finish the season. Like the flighted tournaments and the long drive competition. In the latter, will Mike Kidwell's drive on the first night of the competition be the best and make him a wire to wire winner? I wouldn't think so; the ground is even harder now, certainly there is a long shot left in somebody's big stick, one maybe even twenty or thirty yards longer than Mike's. Of course, maybe Mike has that shot and will put it out there tonight. (Any new contenders? You can still enter the fray by plunking down the entry fee before you go out today. I know one person who wishes he had done that last week, a guy by the name of Trenton. And, as Dave Wininger says, all it takes is one shot.)

Flighted tournaments. Always found these to be the real highlight of the year. I like the leaders in each of the flights but they do have to go out and play today. Whose got the game to stay on top? Which contender is going to go low today? One thing for sure, you had better go low cause conditions, fast and hard fairways, soft and receptive greens, are going to produce a host of low scores. Of course, Eric is out there now picking out spots for the pins. As far as he's concerned, Tuesday is like Sunday in the bigs, tough pin placements, make the players earn their glory.

Okay, Tuesday Men. Your last chance at glory. Make the most of it...

Comments on Tuesday's Play

This and That on League Play

-Phil Eyler came in with the only sub par round (34) and got himself a birdie on #9 to get there.
-Short Jeffers opened with a triple bogie on #1 and then birdied four of the last five holes to get back to even (golf goddess let him know that he is only human by letting him get a bogie on #7 - darn that little bitty hole...).
-Keith Parsons also had his best round ever with a 41 and Bill Carrico has a pretty good round too (43) and that vaulted them into first place in the Team competition.
-Trenton Kidwell made a hurried call to the clubhouse wanting to sign up for the long drive competition just after his drive on #6 passed his Dad's by some twenty yards. Next week for sure, Trenton?
-Mike Kidwell's long drive of last week remains the longest in the competition. Come on, guys, you can do better than 284 yards, can't you?
-John Drake stumbled a little on #1 with a quadruple bogie (okay, maybe more than a little bit...) but recovered nicely with a three over on the other eight holes to remain in contention for the top spot in the Individual competition.
-John Foddrill came out and played golf on both Saturday and Sunday and finds himself in first after his play last night.
-Chris Hogan spent some time with Kevin Johnson at the driving range at the Oaks Monday night. That too paid dividends.
-Junior Byron shot a respectable 36 and got a birdie and hole prize on #9. He was looking for a repeat of his Monday evening scoring when he shot a 32 (welcome toLakeview's Club 32, Junior!). He attributes it to going back to his long putter.
-#9 gave up five birdies yesterday; #4 gave up six.
-congrats to the flight leaders after week one: Phil Eyler, John Walker and Doug Denson, Mike Albertson, Tony Wease and Scot Arthur, John Foddrill, Chris Hogan, and Keith Parsons.
-and in case you haven't noticed, top spot on both competitions, team and individual, remain hotly contested. Next Tuesday should be a dilly of a day at Lakeview with the galleries packed with spectators to see who is going to come out on top.

Tuesday Men's League Flights

The Tuesday Men's League flights for the season ending flighted tournament are posted on the website. As in the past, the flights are based on a weighted average handicap. That average is calculated by taking 60% of the current handicap and adding it to 40% of the average handicap for the year. Also, as in the past, dollar prizes will be given out to the first and second place finishers in each flight.

More Tuesday Men Notes

It's early on a Wednesday morning, the coffee is brewing, and I'm fresh as a daisy (smile...).

League Notes

-Things tightened at the top in both categories though Templin/Nolan in the Team and John Drake in the Individual remain on top. Gonna be a fun last two weeks.
-Long Ball contestants that signed up for all three nights are: Kevin Johnson, Doug Denson, Steve Downey, Terry Padgett, Jr Byron, John Foddrill, Mike Kidwell, Tyler Kidwell, Mark Jeffers and Bryant Trambaugh.
-Other Long Ball wannabees can sign up next Tuesday night or even wait for the final Tuesday.
-At least two balls were longer than Mike's but not in the fairway. Mike has the longest so far at 284 yards. He is also praying for rain, rain, rain, and then some more rain followed by a super grass growth. (Mike, please stipulate long soaking rains during the evening hours, please...)
-Tyler Kidwell, without a second thought, went for the whole enchilada on #1 and made it to the other side of the spillway, barely.
-Short Jeffers returned to zero handicap status; Kevin Johnson reached that plateau; Mark Potts remains well below with another routine 32. Terry Butcher and Phil Eyler drop out temporarily.
-Heard of at least four chip ins during play yesterday, including Skip Ackerman's blast from the sandtrap on nine for par. Mark Potts chipped in for eagle on four and Dad Greg followed suit for a birdie at nine.
-Birdie leaders: Dave Wininger with 30; Phil Eyler with 26.
-Par leaders: Mark Jeffers with 113; Mike Kidwell, 103.

More hot on the way today. Golf early and late.

Tuesday Men Come On Down Please

Tuesday Men take center stage today. And with just three weeks left in the season, do I see a little light at the top of the standings? Do George Templin and Don Nolan have any advantage at all with a 34 point lead? And how about John Drake on top of the individual standings with a 37 point lead? I imagine the odds are in their favor but this has been such a volatile year with several teams and individuals having shared the top spot, I would not be surprised at all to see a few more changes before the bell rings three weeks from tonight.

Terry Butcher and Phil Eyler start the day with big zero handicaps, Short Jeffers just one off. And where have all those young guns gone? I'm reminded of the college basketball players going from the 30 something season to the NBA where they play what must seem like every night. And no break for classroom stuff and strolling around the campus. What a shock to their system the Bigs must be! Am sure that we have not heard the last of Mitch and Weston and Trenton by a long shot.

And speaking of long shots... Load up your big driving stick and take a shot at the longest shot in the long shot competition that starts today. This will be a running competition through the rest of the season. Contestants wind up and hit the ball as far as they can off of #6 tee box. If it's the longest of all come Tuesday evening, September 4th, then you will be declared our long ball champ of 2007. Of course, you won't want to forget that your ball has to be somewhere out there in #6 fairway, not in the lake or over in #4 or on the median or the dam.

A little rain right now, but nothing like the record rain falls they had in Indy, Fort Wayne and South Bend yesterday afternoon. Ok, best get ready and head over to the golf course, see what's going on...

More Tuesday Men

Bryant Trambaugh with young guns, Trenton Kidwell, Jordan Divine, Devon Roach and Mitch Jeffers, during play today.

John Foddrill hobnobbing with Chris Hogan and Curt Johnson as they finish play at #8.

Comments:

-no change at the top: George Templin (37) and Don Nolan (48) increase their lead in the Team competition; John Drake still on top in Individual competition.
-Super sub Mark Potts goes low with a 32 and is now averaging 33 over his last five rounds (his handicap is +2).
-a trio at 34: Junior Byron (he had a good day with morning win with the Boyz), Phil Eyler and Mike Kidwell.
-a trio shot net 29 to share low net for the week: Virgil Harper, Dan Steiner and Dean Winkler.

Next week will see week one of the long ball competition. Those wanting to participate will sign up, pay entrance fee, and have a go at hitting the ball a mile up number six fairway. Area of play will be between the cart path on the right and the emergency spillway median on the left. Competition will last through the final three weeks of the season with the long ball for the week being marked with some indelible marking material (paint) so that marker can be placed for second and third weeks. Winner of the longest ball in the designated area during the three week competition is declared winner and receives money prize. Entrance fee to be determined and will be posted before play next Tuesday.

Tuesday Men Go for Broke

The day starts with a drop in the early morning temperatures (low 60's; we've been having low 70's). Could be an omen that scores for the Tuesday Men (or maybe even the Tuesday Boyz) are going to drop as well.

-Among the low handicappers, Short Jeffers will try to maintain his zero handicap - seems like it's been that way forever; Terry Butcher joins the club; Phil Eyler and Dave Wininger try to get back on the train; Mike Kidwell and Sons (Tyler and Trenton) wanting to get there as well. And then there is Greg Potts who is all of a sudden playing like there is no tomorrow; maybe it's the notion that someone in the family has to be grabbing the golf headlines and with Mark concentrating on other things, like getting ready to leave home and start college, that leaves it up to the old man to pick up the sticks (of course, the old old man, that would be Sam, is doing mighty fine in the Senior League).

-In the team competition, George and Don will try to stay on top with 663 points. No easy task with all those hungry dogs sniffing around and wanting any old thing to assuage their hunger. With four events to go (that's counting today's), I would expect the winning team is going to have to have somewhere between 750 and 800 points total for the year. Maybe less if things really get crazy at the top, crazy like in topsy-turvy. My prediction: change.

-In the individual competition, a lot of guys playing well and loving these hard fairways. John Drake and Kevin Byron up on top and wanting to stay there; Charlie Lyon back in very serious contention; Keith Parsons and Don Nolan lurking. And that's just the top five. Prediction: change.

-Jim Bateman just showed up to get more keys. Lots of guys out early taking advantage of the cool. I'll be heading there in a few minutes to join the Boyz in their pursuit of glory and the hugh money prize awaiting the team with the low score (it's been running about $12 but might get up to $16 today).

Let the good times roll...

Tuesday Men: a different look

I mentioned looking at players with a different perspective, trying to find an additional emphasis on those golfers who have handicaps other than around zero. Well, here's a look at last night's results first sorted by handicap into flights (red, green, blue, brown) then by gross score. The results show players within their own skill level and how they did against those with similar skills. Any comments?

Tuesday Men and Tuesday Wrap

Taylor, Warren's own golf goddess.

Warren Atkison, Taylor, and Tim Voegerl at #7 tee box.

Short Jeffers watching his shot land softly on #7 green and turn towards the pin.
(BTW, Shirley Jeffers, Short's better half, got the first birdie of her relatively short golf life at #9 yesterday. That means she goes into play next week with a birdie at her last hole and a chance to make it two in a row...)

Congrats to the new leaders: John Drake vaulted into the top position in the individual competition with a sterling round of 38 today; and George Templin and Don Nolan climb back into first in the team competition largely on the strength of George's nifty 38. Races remain volatile so new leaders should enjoy their stay at the top - it may be short lived. But maybe not; season's end is just around the corner.

Other news of note:

-Kent Summers played early this morning, shot a very respectable 39 and all that followed his Community League round Monday night which saw him miss a five foot putt at #2 which would have given him his first ever eagle but then actually got that first ever at #4. He and Shirley Jeffers sharing first evers on Monday.
-Greg Potts' 33 was his best ever and that was with a bogey on #8. In other words, it should have been better. People in the clubhouse congratulated him to no end then mentioned that he now qualifies as an A player for the Saturday Scrambles. I agree and look for Greg to get his own team the next time he shows up... Greg, ever the humble one, denied that he was of that A player heft yet...
-Terry Butcher and Tyler Kidwell have par rounds.
-Mike Albertson shot a superb 39 and asked me if I had received my winnings from the American Legion Tournament a few weeks back. I did remember receiving the manila envelope a few days ago but had not opened it yet. Mike shot a 36 hole total of 173 at the tournament and that gave him Post 120 honors and a spot just about at the bottom of the A Flight and a payout of exactly zero dollars. I, on the other hand, played poorly enough (175 total for the two days) that I ended up in a tie for first in the B Flight and a check of $42 plus some change. My oh my, isn't life just a cat's meow at times. Maybe I should share it with Mike... (smile)
-Warren Atkison gets a lift from his little golf goddess, Taylor, and shoots a super 39. She promises to keep him around for a bit longer.
-Tim Miller, after a day that saw him moving three times as much beer as he usually does, came to the course exhausted and then shot a very decent 37.
-Tom McAtee also shot a 37. Best ever, Tom?
-Charlie Lyon shot a 43 and got himself right back into the picture for the championship.

And still Other News

-Brady Quinn signs his Brown contract; head coach not at all happy that he missed so much of early season practice; does not expect him to be anywhere near ready for start of season.

John Drake, George Templin, Greg Potts Rock!

Tuesday Men's League reports are up on the website. Lots of rockers out there today, along with some clunkers. More commentary later - it's dark and I'm heading home... The highlights:

Tuesday Men Take Center Stage

Hot and steamy conditions await contenders for the top spot in Tuesday Men's League play today. Leaders in both competitions, the Carrico/Parson team and Kevin Byron, have nothing to fear if they can play their normal game, hit the ball down the fairway, knock it on the green and then make a putt or two (Darren Clark's prescription to success). What could be more simple? And with the fairways dry and hard, and the greens well watered, and the pin positions not at all that difficult, sounds as if today's scores will take a nosedive. Anybody agree?

On the zero handicap front, Short Jeffers and Phil Eyler each playing very well. Dave Wininger and Terry Butcher on the doorstep with a one handicap going into today's play. Can't say I ever remember the league having four zero handicappers at the same time. And there are several more players in the league who have the potential to be there: guys with names like Kidwell, Jeffers, Muessig, Boyd, Hager and Byron. The flighted tournament at the end of the season should be a dilly.

(Thinking out loud here: I have intentionally placed some emphasis on that magic plateau, the zero handicap, to give credit where credit is due. Reaching that plateau is a major achievement as it reflects not only skill but also consistency week in and week out, and that is sometimes very hard to do when one is coming out to the golf course after a full day of work. I also recognize that there are other plateaus out there that exist for the majority of the league players, like being able to play sub 40 rounds, or sub 45 rounds, or sub 50 rounds. The season ending flighted tournament, which groups players with similar handicaps, offers a glimpse of a different match-up that exists throughout the season but is given little emphasis the way the league is constituted now. So maybe a little spotlighting here and there would expose some fierce competitions throughout the league and not only at the zero handicap level.)

Better get to the golf course in the cool of the day. That would be about three hours ago. Temperatures did drop into the high 70's last night. Not much relief from the heat of the day. Oh well, grin and bear it?

Tuesday Shot of the Day

Arvin, Arthur and Wininger just before their round earlier today.
more men on a hill

more comments:

-I see I missed both Phil Eyler and Short Jeffers getting to that magic number, zero on their handicap. Congrats.
-Mark Potts is also at zero while Dave Wininger goes back to 1.
-change at the top in the individual competition but with lots of time left for more changes before the end of league. look for a poll tomorrow...
-welcome two new subs this week: Bryce Crane and Mark Sherer. Bryce had the better of the two rounds. Good to see Chad Wade and Mark Anderson also in the sub ranks today.
-in team competition, Carrico and Parsons remain on top but race is tightening. Change next week? Templin/Nolan and Butcher/Doyle teams poised to strike?
-feathers in the cap to the sharpshooters: Mitch Jeffers, Mark Potts, Junior Byron and Tyler Kidwell.
-Terry Butcher and Steven Downey had eagles; Terry on #4, Steven on #2.
-Congrats to the low net scorers of the week: Brent Courter with a 27; and Steven Downey and Phil Ader with their 29's. Phil is having a pretty good couple of weeks. Keep it up, Phil.
