On Hoosiers, Women Golfers, the Rule of Law, Polls

Pictures: More from the trip to the Dairy Queen a few days ago; and yes Leah did dress herself - it's nice to see a tag every now and then.

Of Note:

-Tax time again. Or payments on estimated taxes if you have already completed your taxes. Or both. Nice way to start a morning, isn't it?

-Eric Gordon to opt for NBA draft. And other dismal news of the Hoosiers in this Indy Star front page story. Welcome to Bloomington, Coach Crean.

-Lorena doing well, again. Ron Sirak has an excellent article here on the dominance of Sorenstam and Ochoa over the last several years. Didn't realize that Webb and Pak were in the winners' circle so often; Annika had all the headlines, I guess.

-A WaPo article on the Yoo doctrine: during time of war, the president is king and has unlimited powers. Bull honkey. Despicable.

-Two polls via tpm.com: from the South Bend Tribune, Hillary up by three in Indiana though up by a bunch among the elderly as Barack is up by a bunch among the Blacks. And then there is this good news: 81% believe US is on the wrong track. Jeesh. But wait a minute - things are bound to get better. Just think of what we have coming up: Final Four hoops, both men and women; golf leagues starting; green grass; May flowers; warm temperatures; the Masters.

Pictures to end a day

The grandkids getting ready to head to Bloomington early this morning for a bit of Wonder Lab with Mom and Aunt Miki. Diane called this evening from Indy and reported that the they all had a super time with some of the wonders of science.

Supposed legal justification for torture, new Hoosier coach

Picture: A little reading time for Leah.

Of Note:

-WaPo lead article reveals legal argument for torture. This guy Yoo was off the deep end from the start as far as I'm concerned. He obviously believes in an imperial presidency and the god like powers of the president in times of crisis. What I don't understand is that the WH believes that a memo from the Justice Department gives them cover and authority. I mean, John Yoo as the final say on what is law? Come on. Of course, maybe he's just a handy fall guy for the press and others to point to and blame. (Lots of blame to go around and it's the guy in the WH that holds the buck - you remember Harry-the-buck-stops-here guy.)

-lots of activity and energy all around me as Diane and Danielle and Naomi and Leah get ready to head north for a couple of days. Might be a tad quiet around here during that time, especially if I'm at the golf course.

-Tom Crean new coach of the Indiana Hoosiers boys basketball team. Looks like a very good choice to my very nonexpert eyes. Kravitz gives his two cents worth here.

Movie night: Letters from an Unknown Woman

Netflix movie: Letter from an Unknown Woman. From the link:
On a wintry night in 1948 Peking, a writer receives a letter from a dying woman he doesn't know. In the letter, the woman tells of her lifelong love for the man across the stirring backdrop of wartime China. Director and star Jinglei Xu reimagines Max Ophüls's 1948 classic with breathtaking photography and a quietly feminist spin. Xu won a Best Director award at the San Sebastian International Film Festival.
Both Diane and I enjoyed this Chinese movie from 2004. Yes it is a love story but not a teary one. Am going to look for more movies by Jinglei Xu. She acts and directs superbly.

Old Houses and Young Ladies, etc.

Took the Jeep into town for an oil change and then went for a walk with my camera. As I passed the pictured house on Church Street, the owner, Darrell, was coming out on his way to Greenwells for some nails. Wished him a good day and complimented him on his renovation work and then he asked me to come on in and take a look. I did - inside is all up in arms with something happening in every room and building and renovation materials all over the place. But already the grandness of the project is evident. He is returning it to a single dwelling rather than a several apartment residence. I think it's neat though must say that he definitely has his hands full. He's not in any hurry, has a pace of his own, and is obviously enjoying the task. Good for him.

Eric came over on this windy and cool day during the morning hours for a bit of breakfast, and , as it turned out, a spell on the floor with his two young nieces. They no doubt thought of him as cool beans (haven't watched enough kids' shows to know what the appropriate slang is for a neat guy).

That cool guy later was instrumental in the putting up of a solid antenna pole out at the golf course. Makes for much better 'air' reception of HD signals.
