Hembrees Plus Wininger and Holt Win on Cards

This morning's Manager's Scramble was about as close as one could get with three of the four teams posting 29's and the fourth coming in just one off the pace. Diane Bird drew the card that broke the tie and gave the win to the Hembree dominated team, that would be the Dave Wininger, Larry Hembree, son Jackson Hembree and Tom Holt team.

Saturday Wrap, Golf, Football and More

President's Cup

Got to watch some of it this afternoon. Weir and Tiger stand out; Americans dominate the day's golf. So what's with the Europeans that scares the bejeebers out of the Americans, I ask again? I see that the Canadian hero, Mike Weir, is paired with Tiger Woods tomorrow; is that fair? Of course, why not Mike Weir with his local support and already several shots in the highlight reel? Ernie Els offers advice in the link: "Not much I can say. Shoot 62 and hope for the best." Still, tomorrow should be a cake walk for the visitors, including Tiger.

College Football

-Good thing I don't feel anything for the Irish anymore; they start 0 and 5 and have dropped seven in a row. What in heavens name has gone wrong with the Irish football program?!
-Purdue and Indiana have a combined record of 9 and 1. Impressive. Nice to see Purdue rebound and everybody wants the Hoosiers to win, don't they?
-Lots of upsets already this week. Lots of teams that have never been in the spotlight are shining bright this season, at least so far. For instance, South Florida. Feather in the cap to all the newcomers.
-And now that Notre Dame is so woeful, can we think of them as underdogs? And start cheering them on and wishing them well because of that new status?

Today's skin match:

Three skins were won, two of them on par threes - that's unusual. The one on #9 by Jon Boyd was a chip in from left of the green down there in fluff hell. Before the chip in, Jon was bemoaning the fact that the day had been one of his worst ever. Nice to finish on a high note.

Butcher, Hembree, Arvin Claim Scramble Win

For the first time in a long while, Terry Butcher came out and joined the Saturday scramblers , got himself a couple of hole prizes and joined Larry Hembree and Mike Arvin in marching around the course in a trophy winning twenty-nine. Fifteen other players tried to keep pace with only the Doug Denson, Joe Allen and Karry Stoll team staying close with a thirty. The results:

In other action on the course on this lovely Saturday morning, Tony Wease joined Larry Hembree and Mike Bird in going for Johnny Quarters. Named for the late Johnny Jackson, the players went for quarters on driving distance and accuracy as well as low net score for a hole. Today, the Johnny smiles belonged to Mike Bird who walked away with five of the JQ's; Larry had three and Tony walked away with one. Johnny of course would have loved the fact that it was the 'little old guy' who got the majority of the JQ's.

This and That

-The French movie which is in two parts that we started watching yesterday, is very good. Will watch the last hour of the near four hours later today. (Jean de Florette/Manon of the Spring)
-Received in the mail a new book and have started it: Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress. Movie on my queue at Netflix; want to finish the book before the movie arrives.
-Wilbon on the Michael Vick story. I have not been reading up on this story, just catching a headline now and again, though Wilbon makes the point that Vick is going to be more widely condemned for killing dogs than he would have been for wife beating. About right in our society. Dog breeders had better watch out; no thinning allowed. Of course in the beef business, or any other livestock business, the undesirables go to the slaughter house. And in countries where dogs are part of the people diet, Vick would just be part of the food production business. Oh well, so it goes, Michael. Guess there's nothing for you to do but grin and bear it.
-Reggie decides not to make a NBA comeback. Not the body that's holding him back but rather his mind set. Good for Reggie making the right decision. Does remind me of the glory days of the Pacers though. Just a couple of years ago.

Time to get ready for the golf course. See you at that place just up the road and around the corner in just a bit. Bring your short game as there is no problem in getting up near the green with the dry and hard fairways.

Supreme Court to hear case on whether US government has right to hold enemy combatants forever and a day without ever giving them a day in court. About time. A long time ago, maybe as far back as the 60's, I remember someone telling me that America was a great respecter of laws and that Americans were in general a law abiding people. He did say there was one stipulation, that that respect stopped at the border, that outside our own borders, unlawful stuff was fair game. Remember the Frank Church hearings back in the '70's? Where all sorts of illegal things were being planned and carried out by the CIA? (Of course, our current administration is going for broke in a similar fashion with the stipulation that they insist it is all legal because in time of war the president is god, is above the law, makes the law to protect the American people...) So, now the Supreme Court is going to listen and hopefully again slap down the administration for going overboard in its curtailment of individual freedom in the pursuit of security. Again, it's about time.

Cubs sweep Chisox - surprise!

Mahan beats Williamson, wins first at Hartford with two birdies within twenty minutes on hole #18 - pretty exciting stuff for a couple of non winners on the Tour. Very dramatic ending as Williamson took the lead with pars on #16 and #17 then stood by as Mahan topped him twice on 18 with both players knocking it close with their approach shots. Good stuff.

Lets head on over to the golf course and see what we can make happen with a crooked stick and a small hard ball. Manager's Scramble starts at 8am - call in and sign up now or just be there by 7:45. Skin match follows. Shouldn't be any problem with distance this morning what with the ground dry and hard. So expect chipping and putting to be decisive; but then it usually is. And yes we still want that #5 today, that fifth consecutive Saturday with an ace here at Lakeview.

Wonder what the big guys are doing at the US Open about now? Shaking the sleep out of their eyes, drinking coffee, checking the news and their favorite blogs on the internet, getting ready to head to the practice range to hit a few dozen balls. I expect they are acting pretty much like you and me except the venue they are heading to is a little more slick and has all those people standing around. And of course all that tall stuff in the roughs that normal golfers would avoid like the plague and here these guys are getting mixed up in it all the time, making a mess of their score cards, subjecting themselves and others to serious injury. And for the most part not having any fun. Oh well. To each his own.

It's Derek Gilbertson with the Ace Today

For the fourth Saturday in a row, an ace is to be had here at Lakeview Golf Course. Today it was Derek Gilbertson, 26 year old Loogootee golfer who did the striking of the shot that found the hole. Playing with the Dave Wininger scramble team, he watched his shot on #7 bounce once on the green, hit the stick, bounce back and to the left, then spin back into the hole. Holy Cow! Is this getting unreal enough yet? For the record, Derek was using his Acuity gap wedge and hitting a Pro V1 from about 115 yards. He also thought twice about his club selection and actually went back and got out the gap wedge. Smart. Very smart...
