-Hoosiers lose for first time. We knew it was coming; hoped it wouldn't happen just yet.
-Boilers win! Finally a 'W' for an Indiana team. Wayne Pearl is happy.
Comment: If you were watching the ND-MSU game, you know that NBC made a big thing of ND's first touchdown yesterday; rightfully so as it was the offensive team's very first score of the season.
Other News of Note:
-Blackwater, the security force company used by the State Department in Iraq, a loose cannon on deck. Or maybe a bunch of drunk (with power? hate? greed?) cowboys with guns a-blazing. So where's the oversight by the State Department?
-Dave Crooks, local politician, not going to run next year for the seat he's held in State Government since 1996.
-Number One son Marty sent me a note on the just increased salary of OSU's basketball coach (Mata), wondering if this was getting out of hand (the spiraling of salaries for basketball coaches); Indy Star notes IU's Sampson is State's top earner. Hmmm.
Okay, time to go to golf course, help Eric get things started. Busy day yesterday. Got the Jeffer's Youth Group coming in at 3pm today. Hopefully, lots of other golfers as well. Go Colts!

Sunday Funnies Labor Day Weekend

College Football:
-Biggest upset ever? Wolverines knocked off by a pretty good Appalachian State team.
-Irish trounced by GT - GT obviously the far superior team though Irish looked fundamentally sound except for that one defensive player doing something that got him thrown out of the game - bonehead move. Guess the Irish QB position is still up for grabs?
-how did the Hoosiers do?
Golf:
-Tiger and Phil go low in Boston and move into contention.
-Busy day at the golf course; today probably as well with Fields-Wininger Scramble first up at 8am (nine hole).
The World
-I've been neglecting it. Is it still turning?
Be back later. Gotta go get things started at the golf course. Eric will be in the clubhouse this morning.

Sunday Funnies
Books
Cormac McCarthy wins a British prize for The Road, which also won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Diane has just finished this book and found it excellent - both of us have enjoyed his writings, especially his Border Trilogy which included All the Pretty Horses, the one that got us started as big Cormac McCarthy fans. If you are a reader of books and haven't read any of this man's writings, then you have a real treat in store for you. Suggestion: get thee down to the library or over to your local amazon.com website and get yourself any one of Cormac's books, find a quiet room, and have a super time being transported to a different time and place by this master wordsmith. BTW, I started The Road but put it aside when Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress arrived in the mail. It's next in line...
War Deaths
Thers at Firedoglake blogs about the body count in the Iraqi War and laments the fact that we really don't know how many Iraqis have died. Thirty-seven hundred and something Americans, at least seventy some thousand Iraqis but maybe over half a million Iraqis. Americans want a stop to the killing; WH says go forward, just need a few more months or ten years, maybe twenty-five.
Sports
-Lorena Ochoa up by one heading into the final round of the Safeway Classic. Can she make it three in a row?
-Colts breeze; caught a little of the game in the fourth quarter last night; Blue #12 and #15 were playing catch.
-Brady Quinn plays some more for Browns, again is impressive. Go Browns (not against the Colts though...).
-Steve Stricker leading The Barclays. Missing Tiger. A playoff without the #1 golfer in the world? Must not be a real playoff then.
Heading back to the golf course. Eric had the clubhouse this morning; expect to see more of him there (what a great idea!). Pam at the controls at the moment. Diane had her Community League round with Lucas this morning, early, then took Lucas and me down to the Cabin. Kerry Stoll and Lisa Ader among the many good folk there enjoying a hearty breakfast. Lisa encouraged me to keep after her hubby and her brother; I assured her I would. Larry, the brother, is easy to keep after. Yesterday was one of his Dr. Jekyll-Mr. Hyde days on the golf course. For instance, he finished up his 18 hole adventure by parring both holes #2 and #3 but actually hit six atrocious shots and only two good ones. Of course, those two were desperation shots that somehow found the bottom of the cup and thus became more fodder for the legend that is Larry Hembree (smile...).
Ok, see you over at the golf course.

Sunday Funnies
Sports
-Tiger Coasting? If you pay attention to the media and the stats that would seem to be the case. I would imagine that is anything but the case for the guy with all the skills and lots of hardware already in his trophy case. Yes it will be just another day at the office for Tiger but certainly the weight of the pressure, a self imposed pressure, to win a major to have a successful season, has to have its toll. At least one would think. So far, he's done everything right these last two weeks. Expect we'll know rather quickly this afternoon if the #1 professional can match the achievements of our own little giant, Charlie Sheetz, who really does get to coast after claiming the Senior League Individual trophy last Thursday with a brilliant round of 44 which translated into a net 30 which pretty much trounced all the competition.
-Sergio Garcia dq'ed. My oh my. Not good when your playing partner (Boo Weekley) puts down the wrong score and you sign it and turn it in. Not good at all, Sergio. Where was his caddy? Don't these guys have a fail safe checking mechanism?

Hot and steamy and dry though not as horrific as earlier in the week.
Government and Politics
-Impeachment: Bill Moyers at PBS this last Friday night had a discussion with John Nichols and Bruce Fein on why the Founding Fathers made a big deal of impeachment - because they knew what guys who were kings did and they wanted some kind of control to rein in their excessive behaviors. Excessive behavior? The Bush Man? I guess it would depend on your perspective. Was it Barry Goldwater who said extremism in the defense of liberty is is no vice? Of course, there's this little thing we have here in America and something which we espouse throughout the world and throughout our own history: we are a nation of laws, no man is above the law, law rules. So let law rule, and let Congress bring forth articles of impeachment to let the guy in the WH know that his power is bridled. And as John Nichols and Bruce Fein said in the discussion, drop the charges once the behavior is back in line with the Constitution. Seems simple. Need people and our congressmen and women to step up.
-Iraq War: Remains stupid and shameful. We continue to kill and be killed. Are their any peace makers out there?

-Golfers filled the golf course yesterday, glad to get that little bitty break in the weather. Already things heating up today. While I was out there earlier today, watched Joe Allen hit a terrible tee shot from #7 green which almost found the lake but which Joe tracked down with more than a foot to spare at water's edge; and of course you already know what he did with his chip - buries it in the cup ala Tiger Woods on Friday. Sunday morning fun.
-Breakfast time and then another run to the golf course.

Community League Notes
-Community League players Jeff Brookshire (35) and Justin Seal (37) fire career bests in Sunday afternoon play.
-Lucas Bird chips in one for birdie on #3, his first birdie on that hole.
-Jim Ader and Patty Bowling go way low with their net scores - 25 and 27.
-Kent Summers and Bryce Crane had excellent rounds earlier in the week; Kent's 36 his best yet.

While playing some golf with Jim Bateman this morning, I noticed that he was not using his irons and made a comment. Jim said he hasn't been hitting his woods for some time now, can't hit them though he does still carry them around. I had joined Jim and Wilma after they had played the first nine of their eighteen holes and proceeded to bogey three of the first four holes while Jim, with his 100% iron play, had three pars and then a chip in birdie on #4. Hmmm, this guy is on fire. He went on to par number five after skirting the fence edge, avoiding an OB by inches. Reality caught up a little on number six for him with an OB shot from the fairway that ended up with a double bogey. Ok, so finish par-birdie-par and he has his first ever 35. Not to be though he did par #7, but then he went one over at #8 and missed a birdie on nine by another roll of the ball. Still a sterling 37, his best ever nine hole round; and that gave him a 79 for his eighteen, also his best ever. Note from Jim to Junior Byron: I beat Mike by several strokes. (He did, and using only his irons...)
Congratulations to Jim on his fine round. And also to Lorena for her big win in Britain. And also to Tiger who is up by six strokes through nine holes at Firestone. (Do we have a new Big Three here? Jim, Lorena and Tiger? Deserves thinking about...)

-Barry Bonds ties Hank Aaron's home run record. Super cool. Major, major achievement. Barry portrayed as almost a regular guy here. Well, he's almost a regular guy but wearing the King of Swat crown. Temporarily sharing it with Hank; don't expect that to last very long.
-Lorena Ochoa up by six at the British Open; 18 holes away from getting her first major. Not a lock by any means but I wouldn't mind being in her shoes as play starts today.
-Rory Sabitini loving the chance to get Tiger Woods in the final pairing, leads by one when Tiger drops a shot at the eighteenth hole. Brash, brash young man. He sure did play steady yesterday; as did Tiger. Loved the graphic that showed Tiger playing one under for the day while the next several contenders played at twenty-one over. My oh my.
Other Stuff
-the golfers in the pictures posted yesterday are all SAIC scramblers. Low score was -14; Tyler's foursome came in at -9 which is about one more birdie from the -8 he posted in half the holes just a bit ago in one of the Saturday morning scrambles.
-we got a teensy bit of rain out here last night; could use a bucket or two more. A gently tipped bucket.
-expect the world kept turning on us last night though time did stop in our kitchen with the power off just briefly. Diane and I both appreciated the brief halt in life's seemingly hurried and sometimes far too busy schedule.
Heading to the golf course. It's lovely at the moment - it might be a perfect time to get in a few holes. BTW, without golf yesterday morning, my day seemed to last forever; had these extra four hours you see. Made for a twenty-eight hour day. Quite the thing; I'll take a few more please.

-Jim Furyk storming at the Canadian Open: birdie, birdie, then a hole-in-one at the 5th, no, the 4th. Up by two at the moment.
-Natalie Gulbis wins the Evian Masters when she birdies the first playoff hole. I know at least one local golfer who thinks she is the cat's meow.
-Michelle Wie fires a even par on her last nine holes; is encouraged.

More details. Turns out Jack was paired with just a few of the neighborhood kids: Mike Swartzentruber, Brian Swartzentruber, Kelly Strawn Williams. And Kent's 15 under was good for a tie for third place but the prize went to the TJ McAtee team because TJ dropped one in the hole from the tee box at hole #18. Joe Allen told me his team was ten under after nine, took a break for something to eat, then stormed the last nine and finished at twelve under. So what was in that food, Joe?
On William Faulkner
Pam and Kevin Byron and I were in the clubhouse late yesterday afternoon passing time waiting for Junior who was taking grandkids back home (Scotland, if I remember correctly). While we were waiting we were discussing good literature and trying to come up with the names of some of the books we had read. Had a terrible time - everywhere we looked we drew blanks, especially with the most famous of William Faulkner's many novels. Turns out that would be The Sound and the Fury. Tried to remember Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird and couldn't. And then there was the popular mystery/thriller writer of the '90's and now, hmmm, what is his name? Grissom? Oh well. Get on with it, Michael. What got us started on books was a camper over to play some golf who's name was Faulkner and he even has an idea for a book. But for the moment, golf with his seven year old son with wife and two younger kids along for the ride.

Back Home in Loogootee
After a successful but not winning scramble this morning and a quick trip back down the highways and byways, George and I got back to the comforts of home and family. Tired, yes, but appreciative of the good times up north. I see that Sergio managed to lose the British Open and that Harrington almost lost it (I scanned the report - will read more later). Don't know how Tiger did. I hear that 11 under par won the K of C scramble this morning but have no idea which team took the honors. Guess I'll catch up on things as time goes by. Will go back to the clubhouse directly to post Community and USG League results and reports. Then maybe back home for a long rest in the pleasant surroundings of the house on the hill.

On Golf
Mickelson leads at the Scottish Open, Green at the John Deere and Pak at the Corning. Watched a bit of the John Deere on tv yesterday and noticed few people in attendance. Too bad; am wondering if the tournament directors even considered inviting another woman golfer once Mz Wie withdrew.
On Summer Vacations
Iraqi politicians want to emulate American politicians and take August off. Too hot in Baghdag and DC. I agree - they all need to go vacation at the beaches where they can practice pulling their heads out of the sand. And leave the people alone to get on with their lives.
And while on the topic of politicians, did you notice the latest poll numbers? 26%? Come on, nobody gets that low. Do they?

Yes it's hot out there too but safe for all to wander out and enjoy a few holes of golf. When I was out there earlier, a big old pileated woodpecker was banging away on some helpless tree out by Bob Panko's Bench. Bob, I'm sure, was enjoying the company. Ok, I'm heading over there to see what's going on - good golf and good times I imagine.

More Sunday Funnies
Marty and Eric have gone on their way after helping their old man install a new antenna with a remote controlled rotator. Once finished, Marty told Eric that the two of them could be happy that they helped me get into the fifties with this new antenna and the rotator. Reminds me of getting a telephone at our cabin along the Lost River back in 1986 after going without for over ten years: our two youngest had no idea what to do with a telephone in the house. Also reminds me of the earlier funnies today, the Pope and his less restrictive latin masses. Old sometimes can be very good; also sometimes not so very good.
Big crowd at the golf course this morning; people taking advantage of the cooler part of the day. I roamed around just a little bit, saying hello to the likes of John and Judy Walker with grandson Alex, April and Max Brown, Doug Denson, Allen Swayze, Tim Miller and Dale DeLong. Others. A whole bunch of Lynchs. Slow golfing but fun being out in the sun and with so many people having a common passion: whacking a small sphere around with a crooked stick.
War and Peace
NYT has a long editorial calling for an end to the folly. The whole thing is worth reading so go do that and let me reduce any building tension you might get by giving you the ending paragraphs here:

Learned yesterday the Arvin Outing, which was cut short by rain, lightning, and thunder storms Thursday afternoon and evening, has a winner. By golly if it all didn't turn out right in the end after all. The Dan Steiner Team of Dan, Brent Courter, Dan Graber and myself was declared the winner at -3 with a birdie on hole #11 being decisive. That birdie belonged to Dan Graber: his drive, his approach, his putt. The rest of us stood around and applauded. Good news for the good guys. Congrats to my fellow golfers.
Lakeview Golf
Will be heading to the golf course directly and getting the Community and USG League data compiled and online. In the Community League, Bob Norris and Clyde Wake are being chased by a bunch of other teams; do they get caught this week? Clinton Burch and Stephen Bradley could catch them, as could Jeff Brookshire and Justin Seal. Wilma Bateman stands tall in the individual competition and could be caught by a host of other eager golfers. We'll find out here in just a little bit.
Reminder: Senior League is hosting a Fun Tournament this Thursday. All are welcome to the 18 hole event. We will choose up teams at 7:45 and start the games at 8 o'clock. It's all followed with a pitch-in luncheon.

Foggy and damp morning here at the golf course but cool, temps down in the low 60's. Lovely. Laptop is down, maybe for good. Darn. Got several things going on today both at the home front and here at the golf course. Will be back later to read the funnies from around the world, maybe even to post a funnie or two. Did notice that the Pope is lifting restrictions on the latin mass. That takes me back almost fifty years to mea culpas and dominus vobiscums (?). And also noticed that the Libby decision is way out of the ordinary for the Bush man; I should say that the NYT noticed that that was the case - many of us were well aware of this man's commutation and pardoning history - short version - he doesn't do that, ever. Heard in the halls of the WH: "I find nothing wrong with flip-flopping when it comes to matters dealing with my friends and cronies, especially if they are harboring secrets about my behavior, or Dick's behavior". Hmmm, life is so delicious at times, me thinks.

Michelle Wie withdraws - dang it all, young lady, get thee together. Take the time to heal and then come back when you can compete at the top level.
Nice to have the Colts as #1 football team but what happened to the Pacers? Reggie retired, Pacers disappeared from caliber basketball. And no glimmer of light on the horizon as of now.
Son Marty down for the Shoals class reunion dinner. Catfish Festival in process. Daughter Miki has birthday. World turns.

Sunday Funnies
Early morning in Plainfield at the Days Inn. Just had a bite to eat and am getting ready to go find West Chase Golf Course for my 2nd 18 holes in the American Legion State Tournament.
Tried to get on last night but my laptop would not cooperate. I'm in the Inn lobby now. In the scramble yesterday, Dave Wininger's team managed to get a victory on the cards over the Mark Jeffers team, each coming in with a -4. (Will post complete results later this afternoon.) Hope you all had fun; I'm assuming that the conditions were not too wet unlike what we had up here in Brownsburg at Quail Creek - showers before we started and then several times while we were playing. Yuk. Still course was in great condition, greens were lovely and true, and the company, Larry Sargent and Blb Klasko (from LaPorte), was excellent. Shot an 81 for those who want to know, not excellent but okay considering the conditions. Today we play West Chase.
More later after golf and the drive home. Go golf - Eric and Sheryl, Jim and Diane are taking care of things at Lakeview.

More Sunday Funnies
Tiger has off day, finishes second again. Just couldn't come up with one of those patented Tiger finishes. As good as his yesterday was, one would have expected today to have been much better than it was. Of course, we know it was the golf goddess getting after him for missing all those opportunities yesterday. Made him work today. And that wasd almost good enough. That's not bad. Still just a second. Darn. Congrats to the Argintinian, Angel Cabrera. He really did gut it out - what a bundle of nervous energy he was.
And what was Jim Furyk thinking on #17 with the driver in his hands? He was tied for the lead and went into major risk mode. And lost. That 306 yard par four has to be something like our #2, right? A little better protected maybe. Going to have to ask Eric if he can do something about that. Did enjoy watching it - it was a good show right up to the very last putt.

Eric is up in Indy going to a race with Marty. I was in charge of the greens mowing and watering. That meant up earlier than I have been in a long time. Kinda nice out there early in the morning.
And now home and watching the early part of the Open. Should be a honey of an afternoon. And as I do that I'll wander around the world via cyberspace and see if any funnies pop up and smack me in the face.
