Comments:

-Jack Butcher was moaning and groaning with his second shot on #4, one of those miss hits that scoots along the ground and sometimes runs forever. This one ran and ran and then ran some more and finally came to rest just short of the green about 15 feet from the pin. You already know the rest of the story - Jack putts it in for an eagle. Life is so unfair sometimes...
-Wilma Bateman a super day with a gross 44, net 26. Takes low net honors.
-Charlie Sheetz also had a super day: 46 gross and 28 net. Solidifies his hold on the top position.
-Wayne Pearl with the help of Betty Kemp takes the Pearl/Foster team into first place.
-Dale DeLong got Anna Mosby to sub for Vic Wallace and then completely forgot how to play golf. Anna did fine, btw.
-Mike Bird (that's me) had six pars but finished six over. Not good stuff with a triple bogey at #1, a double bogey at #2 and a single bogey at #9. Yuk.

Warm Up

Picture: Wilma Bateman tuning up for today's play late yesterday afternoon.

Sunny and warm today. Expect good golfing. Charlie Sheetz continues his almost daily practice rounds and shot at least one 45 in the past several days. He could be tough to knock out of first place today. Don Lannan and Virgil Harper lead in the team competition but four other teams, including the Norris/Potts team, are close enough to catch them today. Bob Norris has been playing well of late. Leaders are fairly warned: be on your guard today.

Diane has already scooted over to the golf course; best I be doing the same thing.

Mid Week Follies

Still dry out here at the golf course and lots of good scores are being posted. The Potts brothers, Joe and Greg, just turned in 37's. Greg hit the ball well today and gives credit to the clubs, Marks.

Phil Hardwick brought in the boxes of sweet rolls last night. He retired from USG and then opened a donut shop in Washington, going on three years now. He's lost weight so he obviously is not tasting his very tasty goodies. Or else it's all those early hours he's keeping that has slimmed him down.

At home, Diane and I started a movie this afternoon. Diane's selection and yes another one of those with subtitles, this one from Spain. More on it later after we finish it tonight once darkness comes and the golf course goes to sleep.

Is the world getting on without us paying much attention? Spent part of my day with TR - he's in the Badlands right now and has just finished a hunting trip. He is overly proud of his killing accomplishments. Great White Hunter. He did enjoy himself up there in the Badlands, recovering from the death of his precious wife (in childbearing) and also of his mother, the two of them dying in a span of three or four days if I remember correctly. He invested heavily in the cattle business and was at it for three years; don't know how it comes out yet.

Saw that the Cavs lost again last night. Hmmm, not looking good for LeBron and his buddies.

US Open starts tomorrow. Should be a honey and yes I expect Tiger (and I don't think I'm the only one saying this) to do well. Am sure that the missed cut of a year ago rankles him no end.

Vietnames president to visit Washington - that's cool. We've come a long way and appear to be able to forgive them for whupping our butt. If you know your Vietnamese history, you realize that the United States was just one of a succession of powers that this tiny southeast Asian country had to take to the woodshed to gain their independence. At a terrific cost to them and a much less cost to the invaders.

If you haven't played your round yet today, there's still time and the evening is lovely. Tomorrow the seniors take another crack at all the goodies out here on the greensward. The seniors love this kind of weather: the ball runs forever and ever on those dry and hard fairways. Expect Eric to make the pin placements somewhat challenging. Not to US Open specifications, but close? Nah...

Tuesday Shot of the Day Special Edition

Picture: Marvin Graber and his daughters, Mayleen, Macy and Mrenda.

Special Edition since I had so much trouble getting the data up last night; my mea culpas.

-Jim Murphy had his best round ever, a 38, and that helped propel him and Rob Sterling to the top of the team standings.
-did you notice the wholesale changes in the team standings? lots of movement. Tim Miller and Bryant Trambaugh continue their movement to the top.
-Tim Voegerl missed a hole-in-one by just a whisker on #3; did walk away with a hole prize and a birdie.
-Bob Gilley and Murray Stuckey each shot 39's and as a team a net 60 which shared low team net with Murphy and Sterling.
-Gary LaMar, Keith Parsons and Kirk Summers also had pretty good nights and joined Bob Gilley at net 29, second to Jim Murphy's low of 27.
-more of the big guys joining Dave Wininger at zero handicap next week?
-average gross score for the group dropped back into the 42 something range.

Tuesday Shot of the Day

Picture: Virgil Harper and Gary LaMar starting their good rounds earlier today.

Plenty of sun and good golf in store for us today. Expect we'll see more jostling for the top spot in the individual competition. Am also wondering if this is the week one of the big guns gets to that magic zero handicap; none so far this year but several are close. Feather in the cap of our first scratch golfer. Fairways are dry and hard, greens are fast and I expect Eric will look for some interesting pin placements for you all. Should be fun. More as the day goes on.

Update (2:15pm):

Early scores are big. Bring your A game. Virgil and Gary did better than last week, happy with their day. Mike Smith, Joe Doyle, Kent Summers, Kenny Hudson: not so happy. More later.

Update 9pm:

Grrrr. Can't get into the website to update. Will try later.

Update 11pm:

Results are up on the website. Looks as if there was too much data for this slow dial up connection to handle. If you access the data from this site, click on the Tuesday Men League Alternate link.

Update 11:15pm:

Dave Wininger shot a super 33 and his handicap dropped to zero for next event. First of the big guys to reach zero handicap. A feather to Dave.

Golfing and Other Things

Picture: Lucas after hitting tee shot on #9 today. It went right of the green where his Opa's and his Dad's balls were.

Community League

Diane Bird and Shirley Jeffers were out this morning as were Bob Norris and Clyde Wake. Diane came in with a very respectable 49 but was very disappointed as she lost five strokes on the final two holes with a triple bogey and then a double bogey. Bob was very happy with his 46 even going so far to say that he is getting good. You're already good, Bob.

Course was full of golfers this morning doing their best to whack that little ball well. I do kid the golfers about the 'no hole-in-one' rule today as we are all waiting till next Saturday for that magic moment to visit someone at Lakeview. That would be five Saturdays in a row. Crossing your fingers? I didn't think so.

Guess the world is turning okay as we speak; lets hope it continues to do so.

Weather is warming and so are the Community League players. Good stuff.

Pro Sports

Spurs spank Cavs but Cavs show a little life in fourth quarter - a sign of things to come in the next game?

Suzann Petersen wins the LPGA Championship. Michelle Wie finishes last but does finish (the Golf World article on the Rule of 88 and all that noise of the previous week sheds light - looks like to me the LPGA made sure that Mz. Wie knew about that rule so that she could exit before becoming a victim of it. And I say good for the LPGA. Protecting its interests.)

Woody Austin wins the St. Jude down in Memphis. Did you think of Jack's place as you watched yesterday? I did. What a change from sheer beauty to ho hum surroundings. Greens were fast though.

War and Peace

Bulgaria is concerned that it will not get its share of new missile defense largess. You are aware that the current administration is proposing more arms expenditures for missile defense in Europe? Russia and Putin are ticked, threatens to aim its missiles at Europe. Sounds like a revisit to the good old days of the cold war to me. Arms merchants licking their chops. Excuse my French but this on the surface is utter stupidity. Does Reagan's Star Wars initiative come to mind? (btw, still looking for Dante's designated ring of hell for these leaders...)

Doubt on success of surge in Iraq. Killings continue. Funding continues. War remains stupid.

One last item before I hie myself to the golf course (btw, looks like another beautiful day here in Loogooteeland; you know what to do - head on out to the north side and play a little golf in the sun):

Diane sent me several images of planets, suns, stars and galaxies, all of which demonstrate relative size. Whoever put them together (looking for link) was suggesting that we not sweat the small stuff. This particular array of pictures dramatically displays how utterly tiny we really are. Really, really, really tiny.
