Long Drive Champion

Tyler Kidwell lived up to expectations this afternoon by driving his ball at #6 tee box some 317 yards down the fairway and thus becoming the first long ball champion here at Lakeview. Dave Wininger and Mike Kidwell drove it some 300 yards to come in second.

Moving Back East and the Power of Reading

Number One Son Marty was given a heads up on this September 2nd Roger Moon Times Mail article by one of his classmates at Shoals. Has to do with a classmate of Second Daughter Danielle, Chadd Taylor, who has found a good measure of success since his days as a student in Shoals and shares some of the things that he took from his upbringing in that very small town here in southern Indiana. Moon writes:

Chadd told me about the family that moved to Shoals from San Francisco when he was in first grade. I’m sure it was a long way from San Francisco to Bo-Mac’s for this family of six who, Chadd said, “left the ‘established’ life to rough it a bit in the woods of Martin County.” They lived in a one-room cabin. “I stayed over at their house once,” Chadd wrote. “What impacted me for the rest of my life was that the cabin had no television, but instead books everywhere, and the kids were all avid readers. It impacted me significantly that reading for both knowledge and enjoyment was so highly valued to that family, and so obviously valued beyond material things.

Hmmm, I think I recognize that family. Do you?

Joe Gray, our Mystery Golfer of June 7th.The now picture is from this summer and I am pretty sure it was taken on #1 green just after Joe made a putt. The then picture? Hmmm, hard one. Thirty something , Joe? Forty?

Tuesday Men One More Time Please

Final day of the season for the Tuesday Men and we still don't have our winners. Does look like it's a two team race in the Team competition though not impossible for the third and fourth place teams to sneak in. Bill Carrico and Keith Parsons take on George Templin and Don Nolan - would have been fun to have them go out together this afternoon; they won't be separated by much as they tend to play about the same time. Dave and Dan along with John and Dean wish them the best, I am sure...

And in the Individual competition, any one of the top eight could easily end up on top tonight. John Foddrill was out again this weekend hoping for a repeat of last week when he also played on the weekend and then shot a 38 on Tuesday night. I imagine Trenton would love a 32 and a long drive on #6. John Drake is playing awfully well. Kevin Byron is explosive and could go low. Charlie Lyon knows what first place feels like and has Phil and John and Skip to push him along. Curt Johnson still looking for that elusive 38; would be a good night to get it. Don Nolan and Keith Parsons have to be considered prime contenders but they have to go low to win it all; they have been know to do just that.

Then there is all that other stuff going on to finish the season. Like the flighted tournaments and the long drive competition. In the latter, will Mike Kidwell's drive on the first night of the competition be the best and make him a wire to wire winner? I wouldn't think so; the ground is even harder now, certainly there is a long shot left in somebody's big stick, one maybe even twenty or thirty yards longer than Mike's. Of course, maybe Mike has that shot and will put it out there tonight. (Any new contenders? You can still enter the fray by plunking down the entry fee before you go out today. I know one person who wishes he had done that last week, a guy by the name of Trenton. And, as Dave Wininger says, all it takes is one shot.)

Flighted tournaments. Always found these to be the real highlight of the year. I like the leaders in each of the flights but they do have to go out and play today. Whose got the game to stay on top? Which contender is going to go low today? One thing for sure, you had better go low cause conditions, fast and hard fairways, soft and receptive greens, are going to produce a host of low scores. Of course, Eric is out there now picking out spots for the pins. As far as he's concerned, Tuesday is like Sunday in the bigs, tough pin placements, make the players earn their glory.

The Road and Other Early Monday Morning Stuff

Books and The Road

Did finish Cormac McCarthy's The Road last night. Another pretty bleak picture of the human race in this little story of a father and a son on the road to some kind of survival quite a bit of time after the world has been incinerated by an unnamed cataclysm. That makes two books by McCarthy this year, the other one being No Country for Old Men, each of which perceives the world as a pretty nasty place and one whose people are not very nice. A little hope at the end of this book, but not a lot.

Sports

-Sherri Steinhauer wins the State Farm Classic when she rolls in a 23 foot putt from the fringe to save par on the 72nd hole. Wire to wire winner. Annika finishes in a tie for third and looks to be playing like her old self again. Will she challenge Lorena?
-Cubs still in first in their division. Wow! Go Cubbies!
-Eric told me the Hoosiers slaughtered ISU on Saturday. Go Hoosiers.
-Irish will not go undefeated this year. Heard Doug Flutie say they would be lucky if they get two wins in their first eight games. That's bleak.
-No recent hole-in-one at Lakeview. What's up, guys?
-Tuesday Boyz going to Vincennes today, Vincennes Golf Club formally Foxridge.
-Tuesday Men wrap their season up with play today. It's been a great season and we'll know who ends up on top later today. Amazing...

Weather

-continued hot and dry. We are burning up. Definite brownish tinge to the golf course. Greens remain an oasis in the midst of dry and hard. Cool nights help, a lot.
-Maybe rain Thursday or Friday. Okay.

I'll be at the golf course this morning. Better come on out and get some golf in before the Men descend later this afternoon.
