Work and Play on Highway 231

Take your pick: the east side of the road for a little work or the west side for a little play. Or find a way to take them both in as you wend your way through a busy life. For the Monochrome Maniacs out there. Go here for many more from around the world.

Golden Moment on a Friday Evening

A boater and a tuber enjoy the quiet of a Friday night. Well, guess they probably weren't noticing the quiet all that much.

Another Baby Bird

This one is a Red Winged Blackbird - its parents were giving me all sorts of 'what-for's and insisting I stay aware from their baby. Poor little thing - I think it really wasn't all that excited about getting out of its nest just yet. Bet Mom and Dad probably insisted. Good thing is that there are lots of bugs out there to be had.

Baby Bird

Heading up #6 fairway yesterday, I came across this little guy sitting underneath the pear tree. Was commenting to Diane just a week or so ago how we never see baby birds. When was the last time you saw anything other than a full sized robin? Well, this week I come upon two baby birds, on the ground, apparently getting their first taste of life outside the nest. Don't know what this one is yet - haven't done the research. Can it be a Martin or a Barn Swallow? I think (I googled) a Cliff Swallow.

Lovett Used Cars

Across from the Mi Pueblo over in Washington. Not only used but old, something guys would have been driving around seventy or eighty years ago.

High Noon...

...and all is well with the world. Jim and Wilma took us down to the Mi Pueblo in Washington for lunch. Lovely place with lots of color. Company was grand. While Wilma was chating with Diane, Jim was off somewhere else - he wouldn't say where.

Summer, at last!

Seems like the warm weather has been slow in getting here this year - our spring has been plentiful with rain and wet. But now it has arrived and suddenly the lake is spotted with boats and skiers and people out having a little fun in the sun. Above a lone skier was starting the Memorial Day weekend a little early (Friday night) with a spin and a bump and a twist and a turn around the lake. He even did a somersault (summersault?!) just before I had my camera ready to shoot. Ah, summer. This is a b&w for the monochrome maniacs around the world. More here.

New Shed Roofing

Diane helped me put some metal roofing on one of our little sheds in the back yard. Of course, we picked the warmest day of the year to do this little task. Not done yet but just about. Need to go back and get some closures, put on the end caps and then the ridge cap. Not much, as I said, but it will probably exhaust me. The construction labor reminded us of the summer and fall of 1975 when we moved to Martin County, bought 70 acres south of Shoals on the Lost River. We cut down trees, cleared brush, had lumber delivered which we then carried up a hill to our home site. Then we built our house. From scratch, without electricity (made a lot of use of a chainsaw). Remembering all that, I must give a hats off to the wifey and the little kids (ages from 12 down to 7, four of them) for everything they did to help out in making it all happen. From carrying boards and water up the hill to putting up with cold nights in some of the worst winters Indiana has ever had. Tough times. Tough kids. Any of you guys want to do it over again? Oh, and by the way, the metal roofing is a piece of cake compared to what we did way back in '75.

At least the first ones I've seen out at Boggs. Photo taken last night just after dinner time.

Whiling away the early evening

Verlyn Knepp and his young buddy were doing a good job of whiling away the early evening yesterday fishing on Boggs Lake. Never did see them bring in a fish but, knowing Verlyn, expect they got themselves a mess.

On the lookout

A fisherman on Boggs Lake wanders the shoreline looking for a tug on his line. Alone but far from lonely, I would imagine.

Meanwhile, on top of the dam, three golfers watch the flight of a small white orb hoping that it will land on a distant parcel of green.

And what would your preference be if given a couple of hours to idle away? Maybe to take photographs like a Monochrome Maniac? For more b&w's from around the world, go here.

First to go to seed

Found this lone dandalion in the midst of a bunch of other flora reaching high for the daylight and managing to go to seed well before its friends and neighbors. The will, or need, to survive must be very strong in this ubiquitous plant.

Four kids, a dog, and a dad

The kids and the dog look alive and vital. Not so sure about the dad. (From the early '70's when we lived in Santa Ana, CA.)

Elvira and Kayla

A couple of young lady b&w's from our Saturday visit to the local Mexican restaurant, an establishment next to the supermarket where the feathered friends were doing their commentating. Elvira was keeping an eye on us and Kayla was getting some after lunch treats for each of us. Can you guess what the treats were? More monochromes here!
