Candlelight on a July night

We lost electricity for several hours last night and had to do with candlelight at the dining table. Very different than the usual evening with the hum of lights and fans and tv's and computers and refrigerators. Didn't take long for Diane to go off to bed - darkness is great for sleeping, isn't it? I finished a book (The Reader by Bernhard Schlink - it's excellent, as is the movie), drove around the neighborhood (to see how extensive the outage was), took some photos (see above for one example), and eventually turned off what I remembered was on, and went to bed. Guess what - thirty minutes later I was suddenly awake again with the house coming back on - fans and coolers and lights, all those accepted and welcome additions to our modern lives. Still, the candlelight was enchanting, even if for just a little bit. It's Monochrome Weekly time and more from around the world can be found here.

One of the joys of outages - at least it provided you with a good picture.

Nice shot! Sometimes the silence of everything is so soothing.

We had a small power drop out last week through the storm. Half and hour of peace. Lovely idea of an image especailly a mono.

Glad you were well prepared! The chance gave you an opportunity and you made the best of it!

You're a better sport than I - power outtages here mean no air conditioning, and at this time of year that is utterly stifling in just a few minutes time.

Nice shot, very soothing.

Great shot, its funny how we forget to switch things off in a power outage.

Looks very tranquil. I've lived w/o electricity of various occasions - one gets quite used to it :)

Great shot of the candles. That's very difficult shot, well done.

I love candle light but I have to admit w/o the electrical toys in life I too would have gone to sleep ... nice shot, Mike!
