Helpful commentary

Remember how I posted a photo of Clinton B. where he was highlighted in a circle of color and wondered how certain photographers were able to highlight a part of their photo by leaving it in color? I linked to the photographer of the above photo (which is a photo I took of his photo on my monitor with his permission - be sure and go here to see his posting and his other excellent work) as an example of what I was talking about. Well, that photographer has left a comment on that blog exlaining just how he did that:
The answer: two layers, one mono and one colour. The(n) very neatly erase the
top mono layer to expose the colour underneath. The reverse way I used to do it
in the darkroom, when it was all about painting the colour on to the print.

Now you know and a big thanks to Alfie Goodrich, the photographer in Japan and the author of the above, for his comment.

A couple of other comments on this blog, Loogootee's Ice Fall, help clarify the difference between JPEG (...not actually a file format, but a compression algorithm, Mojo adds...) and RAW formats. Thanks to Marty and Mojo (go here for Mojo's blog and photos) for the explanations which really help.

If you haven't guessed it, I'm very thankful for the comments from these people from around the world who have taken the time to note and respond to a post of mine. Very, very helpful.
