Mexican fare at Los Bravos with the Batemans, the early Fifties

Had lunch at Los Bravos in Loogootee with Jim and Wilma. Ruby, a Mexican senora, made it feel like true Mexican fare. The food was delicious; the company exceptional.

The rest of the world is merrily going about its business. Obama is raising scads of money; Hillary raising some of her own. Republicans look like they have McCain whether they like it or not. Howard Dean already suggesting what Dems need to do - remind people of who this man McCain really is (the link from digby).

That's all in the world of American politics. Of course there is a much wider world out there, one that includes family, friends, business, sports, weather, just to mention a few things. In my own world of books, I have started Halberstam's The Coldest Winter: America and the Korean War. Haven't done much reading up on that particular war, nor seen any great amount of coverage of any sort. So this book might fill in a gap for me, covering years in which I just turned the corner from being a youngster to gaining status (?) as a teenager. Major concern for me during those years was sports - basketball, baseball and football. Don't remember many of the stars back then, ones that I might have seen as heroes. Maybe Johnny Lattner at ND; think Ernie Banks with the Cubs and Bill Russell with the Boston Celtics came a bit later. Baker to Banks to Fonda? Cousey to Russell? And who was the big football star for the Cleveland Browns? Lou Groza was the kicker. Hmmm, the quarterback was... Don't remember at the moment. (Took me till after dinner but I finally came up with his name; and get this, he shares a birthdate with Danielle!) Elroy Crazylegs Hirsh played for the LA Rams. George Blanda was probably around with the Bears but won't say for sure. More innocent times then, at least for teenagers. Adults had to deal with McCarthy and Communism and Korea and how to get the money to buy a television. Long time ago.
